Mission
The Hearts for Kids Program of Take Heart Association Project (THAP) aims to provide life-saving surgery, support, resources and hope to families of underprivileged children in Kenya and East Africa suffering from heart defects and disease.Vision
Our vision is for Kenya to have a self-sufficient congenital heart program that can provide the necessary medical care to children and adults who suffer from heart defects and disease, especially for those who have few resources to pay for such care. THAP’s future goal is to open a facility for those children and their families to stay because they must travel long distances for evaluations and surgeries.Purpose
More than 10,000 babies are born in Kenya with a congenital heart defect each year. However, at this time, there is no congenital heart program in all of Africa. Lacking the access to modern medical care, many of these children die needlessly in their early childhood years.
Since 1992, THAP has assisted over 100 needy children and young adults to undergo successful heart surgery in Kenya, India, Italy, and the United States. It is truly remarkable that seventy-five percent of all the patients we have helped received their life-saving treatments only since 2002.
The medical care that Hearts for Kids assists in providing includes pre-op diagnosis, medications, coordinating facilities/physicians, arranging overnight and extended-stay accommodations, transportation to/from hospital facilities, and post-op care.
History
Peter Mbogo Kamau, following the death of his daughter from rheumatic heart disease, founded THAP in Kenya in 1992. He turned his grief to action, devoting himself full-time to helping the thousands of patients who suffer from heart defects and disease. THAP is a registered nongovernmental organization in Kenya and a tax exempt 501c3 nonprofit organization in the United States.Board of Directors
